Jim Carrey - Yes Man Movie Synopsis, Review, Critic, Trailer

Yes Man Movie Synopsis
Wallace’s second solo book, Yes Man was published in July 2005. In it, he describes how he spent six months “saying Yes where once would have said No”, to make his life more interesting and positive. In this book he shows the tribulations and mischief that he got up to while he said yes to any question or proposal. A film adaptation of Yes Man is in development with Warner Bros. and will star Jim Carrey . It is set to be released for the 19th December 2008. Based on Danny Wallace’s autobiographical book, Jim Carrey stars as a man who decides to spice up his life by saying yes to everything in his life that he would normally say no to. Fun With Dick and Jane’s creative team of director Peyton Reed and writer Nick Stoller head up the production. Zooey Deschanel co-stars as the romantic interest, with Bradley Cooper appearing as Carrey’s best friend.

Yes Man Movie Review and Critic
Carl Allen (Jim Carrey) avoids unwanted human interaction and commitments by refusing every favor, request, suggestion and offer he receives. But, after attending a self-help seminar where he is challenged to say “Yes” to any and every opportunity that comes his way, Carl discovers the power of endless possibilities and finds his life changed in amazing, unexpected ways. A movie review and critic By ZuGuide

Jim Carrey stars as Carl Allen, a man who signs up for a self-help program based on one simple principle: say yes to everything…and anything. At first, unleashing the power of “yes” transforms Carl’s life in amazing and unexpected ways, but he soon discovers that opening up his life to endless possibilities can have its drawbacks. A movie review and critic By Leanne Cari

Jim Carrey has said yes to “ Yes Man,” putting the Warner Bros. comedy first on his busy schedule, which has been amped up since his move to CAA. Based on a memoir by British author Danny Wallace, “Yes Man” casts Carrey as a guy who aims to change his life by saying yes to absolutely everything that comes his way. A movie review and critic By MICHAEL FLEMING

Carrey stars as a lonely loan officer who suddenly vows to say yes to every opportunity that comes his way in Yes Man. But it was longtime Carrey fan Bradley Cooper who fell over himself to say yes to costarring as Carrey’s best friend. ”I just didn’t want to mess up,” he says. Little did Cooper know that his nose would nearly be broken by the comedic contortionist. ”There was a brawl scene outside a bar and there were 15 extras and stuntmen, and Jim shouts, ‘Let’s just do it,’ says Cooper. “These guys ram into each other, and in one take, Jim pops his head up and bashes me in the nose.” A movie review and critic By Entertainment Weekly

Matthew Broderick - The Tale of Despereaux Movie Synopsis, Review, Critic, Trailer

The Tale of Despereaux Movie Synopsis
A diminutive mouse strives to make a mammoth change in his troubled kingdom in this adaptation of author Kate DiCamillo’s Newbery Medal-winning children’s book. A long time ago, in the distant kingdom of Dor, a horrible accident broke the heart of the king, left a beautiful princess crestfallen, and filled the townspeople with despair. As the sun disappeared from the sky and the flowers were drained of color, the laughter slowly ceased in this once-magical land. It was into this darkened world that a tiny mouse named Despereaux Tilling was born, and while this virtuous little rodent may have been short in stature, his bravery was ultimately too big for such a small world to contain. An unlikely hero with oversized ears and a discernible wheeze, Despereaux was taken with tales of chivalry, and longed to one day become a noble figure among his people. Sometimes in order to realize their true destiny, heroes must first experience great hardship, however, and when Despereaux fails to adhere to the rigid rules of his society, he is banished from Dor.

The Tale of Despereaux Movie Review and Critic
In which tells the story of Desperaux (hopelessness in French), the small, unique mouse that manages to survive the birth of her litter; distinguished also by their enormous ears, to be very sickly, able to read and being born with eyes open (something very rare among the mice).  The study commissioned by giving life to the small rodent is Universal Animation Studios, in fact, this would be the first animated film from Universal Studios that uses the professional 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Adrien Brody - Cadillac Records Movie Synopsis, Review, Critic, Trailer

Cadillac Records Movie Synopsis
In this tale of sex, violence, race, and rock and roll in 1950s Chicago, “Cadillac Records” follows the exciting but turbulent lives of some of America’s musical legends, including Muddy Waters, Leonard Chess, Little Walter, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James and Chuck Berry. The story of the blues in 1950s Chicago is told in Sony BMG Film’s Cadillac Records, a musical drama written and directed by TV veteran Darnell Martin.

Cadillac Records Movie Review and Critic
“Cadillac Records” comes from Sony Music Film, so it’s no surprise that the project is more a soundtrack in search of a movie than a film about the pre-eminent blues record label of the ’50s and ’60s and the fabulous artists who passed through its Chicago recording studio. Nevertheless, writer-director Darnell Martin has assembled a stellar cast to impersonate these artists both as characters and musicians. That starts with executive producer Beyonce Knowles, who performs dynamic versions of Etta James classics and delivers the dramatic goods as the troubled and badly addicted young woman who lives the blues she sings. A movie review and critic By Kirk Honeycutt

The second feature this year to focus on the same musicians, “Cadillac Records” takes a far broader approach than Jerry Zaks’ “Who Do You Love,”‘ which concentrated more on the conflicted character of Chess than on the artists he hired, promoted, profited from and, some say, exploited. In “Cadillac Records,” Adrien Brody cuts an appropriately oily figure as the man who founded Chess Records in 1956, while Wright delivers a performance of eloquent, simmering dignity as Waters — the first Chess star, one of the great vocalists in American music and the dramatic engine of Martin’s film. A movie review and critic By JOHN ANDERSON, Kevin Mambo

Fanny Ardant - The Secrets Movie Synopsis, Review, Critic, Trailer

The Secrets Movie Synopsis
In The Secrets, two brilliant young women discover their own voices in a repressive orthodox culture where females are forbidden to sing, let alone speak out. Naomi, the studious, devoutly religious daughter of a prominent rabbi, convinces her father to postpone her marriage for a year so that she might study at a Jewish seminary for women in the ancient Kabalistic seat of Safed. Naomi’s quest for individuality takes a defiant turn when she befriends Michelle, a free-spirited and equally headstrong fellow student. When the pair encounters a mysterious, ailing foreigner with a disturbing past named Anouk (the iconic French actress Fanny Ardant) they begin a risky journey into forbidden realms. In the hopes of easing her suffering, Naomi and Michelle secretly lead Anouk through a series of Kabalistic cleansing rituals. The process opens up overwhelming new horizons for the girls who find themselves caught between the rigid male establishment they grew up in, and the desire to be true to themselves, no matter the cost.

The Secrets Movie Review and Critic
With an exotic Jewish subculture, a French star and a lesbian love affair, Avi Nesher’s “The Secrets” would appear to have all the art cinema demographic bases covered. Part of a stream of Israeli films treating the country’s Orthodox community with an alternately critical and sympathetic liberal-feminist point of view, drama about a group of Kabbalah students caring for an outcast is excessively overwrought and drawn out. Serious topics risk tilting into unintended comedy, and it’s unclear if the intended auds will tolerate the entire package, pointing to mixed commercial results. A movie review and critic By ROBERT KOEHLER

The Secrets is a mesmerizing excursion into an insular spiritual community, while candidly touching on its simultaneously euphoric and oppressive aspects. And though the story’s emotional elements extend for too long a time and reinforce some female sterotypes while leaving many questions unanswered about the mysterious Anouk who has so deeply affected these impressionable young women, the film conveys an undeniable alluring tenderness, however tragic. A movie review and critic By Prairie Miller

Supporting characters are often no more than caricatures, with Dana Ivgy (who was wonderful in 2004’s Or) especially suffering in an underdrawn role of limited substance. Adir Miller as Yanki on the other hand gets to have quite an impact while allowing the audience to smile along, in a role that may have otherwise seemed inconsequential. In the end, The Secrets succeeds in becoming a reasonably moving love story set against a backdrop of Orthodox Judaism and sexual repression. Occasionally clunky transitions in character aside, the performances of the two leads are strong, and - although it slightly outlasts its welcome - the film is a satisfying experience. With a little more attention to detail, however, The Secrets may have been great. A movie review and critic By Mark Lavercombe

Rhys Wakefield - The Black Balloon Movie Synopsis, Review, Critic, Trailer

The Black Balloon Movie Synopsis
In The Secrets, two brilliant young women discover their own voices in a repressive orthodox culture where females are forbidden to sing, let alone speak out. The Black Balloon Movie Review and Critic
You could be forgiven for thinking that if you’ve seen What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, you’ve seen The Black Balloon. With its tale of a resentful teen constantly needing to cope with the care of his autistic brother, The Black Balloon will win no prizes for originality, but it’s acted with such respectful conviction and directed with such delicate grace that it deserves to find its own audience. Charlie (Ford) needs round the clock surveillance if he’s not to run around the streets in his underpants or smear his shit on the bedroom floor, both of which brother Thomas (Wakefield) discovers to his cost when he’s not giving the situation his undivided attention. A movie review and critic By Paul Greenwood

An autistic sibling teaches valuable life lessons in the alternately soft and intense family-friendly drama “The Black Balloon.” Yarn good-naturedly tackles the complex reality of living with a disabled person head-on, and auds are fully encouraged to experience the conflicted feelings of its sensitive teen protagonist. Fans of Toni Collette (also co-exec producing) will help respectable returns float in from the niche family entertainment sphere, and ancillary will be durable. Following pic’s preem as the opener of Berlin’s Generation 14plus section, fests with teen sidebars will want to tie this down. A movie review and critic By RUSSELL EDWARDS

The Black Balloon is a welcome addition to the Australian coming-of-age genre. While it doesn’t offer anything terribly original in terms of ingredients or recipe, it does what it set out to do extremely well. Thomas (Rhys Wakefield) is about to turn 16. He’s just moved to a new home and started a new school and all he wants is fit in. When his pregnant mother (Toni Collette) has to take things easy, his father Simon (Erik Thomson) puts him in charge of his autistic older brother Charlie (Luke Ford). A movie review and critic By Mathieu Ravier

Based on the larger-than-life past of Australian director Elissa Down, The Black Balloon journeys into the often difficult terrain of living with a disabled loved one. In this, her first feature film after a stint of short films including Pink Pyjamas, HMAS Unicorn and Samantha Stewart, aged fourteen, Down drew inspiration from life with two autistic brothers, saying there was no other story she could tell with more truth. “The Black Balloon is a metaphor for a ‘different’ childhood, filled with moments of chaos, joy and sadness”, she said. “You tend to do your autobiographical film later on after a few films, but it just naturally seemed the story to tell, because I come from a place of insight…this is the story I know and know absolutely well.” A movie review and critic By Chanel Bartolo

Sean Penn - Milk Movie Synopsis, Review, Critic, Trailer

Milk Movie Synopsis
After moving to San Francisco, the middle-aged New Yorker, Harvey Milk, became a Gay Rights activist and city politician. On his third attempt, he was elected to San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors in 1977, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the USA. The following year, both he and the city’s mayor, George Moscone, were shot to death by former city supervisor, Dan White, who blamed his former colleagues for denying White’s attempt to rescind his resignation from the board. Mr. Milk had been the subject of several books and the Academy Award-winning documentary feature, The Times of Harvey Milk (1984); but Milk (2008) is the first fictional feature to explore private aspects of the man’s personal life and career. Milk was filmed on location in San Francisco. Many of Mr Milk’s real-life surviving friends and former associates participated in the making of this film, several appearing on camera.

Milk Movie Review and Critic
Sean Penn isn’t exactly lacking in award statuettes but his carefully rendered and extremely endearing performance as martyred gay politician Harvey Milk in Gus Van Sant’s biopic should earn him yet more hardware. It’s hard to imagine another actor so effectively capturing the same blend of pluck, canniness and exuberance that made Milk a key figure not just in the gay-rights movement of the ’70s but in the lives of his friends and colleagues. A movie review and critic By Jason Anderson

“Milk,” written by Dustin Lance Black and directed by Gus Van Sant, is the first great film to look at civil rights from the perspective of the gay movement. The subject, of course, is the late, charismatic San Francisco gay activist and politician of the 1970s, Harvey Milk, played with extraordinary depth and wisdom by Sean Penn. “Milk” resists bumper-sticker identifications: Yes, it’s a biopic, a love story, a civil rights movie and sharp political and social commentary. But it transcends any single genre as a very human document that touches first and foremost on the need to give people hope. A movie review and critic By Kirk Honeycutt

In 1977, Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) becomes the nation’s first openly gay man to be voted into public office, joining the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Using his victory to champion not only gay rights but human rights as well, Milk unites a diverse group of people from across the political spectrum with his outspoken manner and sense of humor. But, as he gains recognition and increases his public profile, Milk also faces hostility from fellow supervisor Dan White (Josh Brolin), the man who would ulitmately take the lives of both Milk and Mayor George Moscone (Victor Garber). A movie review and critic By ZuGuide

But good as most of the cast is, the show belongs squarely to Penn. Made to more closely resemble Milk via an elongated nose, which also makes his face look narrower, the actor socks over his characterization of a man he’s made to seem, above all, a really sweet guy, but who crucially possessed the fearlessness and toughness to be a highly successful political motivator, agitator and, ultimately, figurehead of a movement. Penn’s Harvey is a man with a ready laugh, alive to the moment, open to life regardless of neuroses and past tragedies, and acutely aware of one’s limited time on Earth. The explosive anger and fury often summoned by Penn in his work is nowhere to be seen, replaced by a geniality that is as welcome as it is unexpected. A movie review and critic By TODD MCCARTHY

Will Smith - Seven Pounds Movie Synopsis, Review, Critic, Trailer

Seven Pounds Movie Synopsis
Will Smith will play the role of a suicidal, guilt-ridden man who attempts to make amends for his past. This gesture, which should be his end, marks his future. He crosses the tunnel of desperation but instead he finds the light thanks to a meeting with a woman who pulls him away from his agony. Will Smith eventually falls in love with this woman, played by the actress Rosario Dawson, who has become famous for her role in the Spike Lees movie He Got Game featuring Denzel Washington. Shes also a well-known actress for her performances in Grindhouse by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, Sin City, Rent, and Alexander. Texan actor Woody Harrelson (North Country, The Walker, Natural Born Killers, Indecent Proposal) a blind pianist who befriends Will Smith. The movie will also feature the Canadian actor Barry Pepper, famous for his role as a crack shot in Saving Private Ryan by Steven Spielberg, and for his memorables performance in The Green Mile and in Enemy of the State.

Seven Pounds Movie Review and Critic
“Seven Pounds” reunites Will Smith with the filmmaking team behind the pic that earned him his last Oscar nomination, “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Returning to the helm is Italian director Gabriele Muccino. Oscar winner Steve Tisch (”Forrest Gump”), Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal are part of the producer lineup again. And, among others, Oscar-winning editor Hughes Winborne (”Crash”) is also back. Smith plays an IRS agent “with a fateful secret who embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers,” according to Sony. Pic hasn’t been screened yet, and its plot is deliberately being kept under wraps (because it could be seen as a bit of a downer). Suffice it to say, though, the story promises those important kudo-baiting hallmarks: life-changing love and, of course, redemption. A movie review and critic By SHARON SWART

The first trailer for the Columbia Pictures drama Seven Pounds, starring Will Smith, has been leaked onto the web. In the film, Smith plays Ben Thomas, an IRS agent with a fateful secret who embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers. It is a project that has reunited Smith with the director and producers of The Pursuit of Happyness. It also stars Rosario Dawson, Michael Ealy, Barry Pepper and Woody Harrelson. I know it’s early in the morning and my eyes are prone to playing tricks on me, but this looks interesting — like the sort of interesting that ends in Oscar Buzz. A movie review and critic By Neil Miller

I’ve seen the poster for this but beyond that haven’t really dug into it up until now. Will Smith teamed up once again with the director and producers he worked with in Pursuit of Happyness for the movie Seven Pounds. In addition to Will Smith the film stars Rosario Dawson and Woody Harrelson. Italian director Gabriele Muccino impressed me with “Happyness” and I’m sure this will be quite the emotionally moving film as well (I’m a sucker for these things, although I generally don’t go out of my way to watch them). Brad Pitt - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Movie Synopsis, Review, Critic, Trailer

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Movie Synopsis
I was born under unusual circumstances. And so begins The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, adapted from the 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards: a man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time. We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918, into the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any mans life can be. Directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett with Taraji P. Henson, Tilda Swinton, Jason Flemyng, Elias Koteas and Julia Ormond, Benjamin Button, is a grand tale of a not-so-ordinary man and the people and places he discovers along the way, the loves he finds, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Movie Review and Critic
For many, F Scott Fitzgerald will forever be associated with Robert Redford’s incarnation of Jay Gatsby in the 1974 film The Great Gatsby, which remains the best known screen realisation of his writings. This may be about to change thanks to The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, adapted by Eric Roth from a lesser-known Fitzgerald short story, and David Fincher first film since 2007’s Zodiac. A movie review and critic By Daniel Etherington

I scored a few tickets for an “UNTITLED” screening at Paramount Studios while standing in line at the Tropic Thunder screening, which is beyond hilarious. After a long wait in the burning sun, we were taken inside Paramount Studios and seated in one of the nicest screening rooms I’ve ever seen. Whatever the film was—I was just excited to watch something on their screen. But I was not disappointed when we found out it was David Fincher’s upcoming film, THE CURIIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON. A movie review and critic By intitcoolx

n to the movie review. It’s based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story but it’s been expanded quite a bit because the epic film runs about 2:45 long. It opens in New Orleans in a hospital as Katrina is approaching. Fincher uses the framing device of Blanchett’s character, Daisy, on her death bed to tell Benjamin’s story. Julia Ormond (wasted in a thankless role) plays her daughter Caroline, who reads from her mother’s diary, taking us into flashbacks about a baby born in New Orleans in 1918 looking like an 80-year-old man (an older woman takes one look at the baby and says, “He looks just like my ex-husband!”). We soon find out this baby is not near death, as a doctor suspects, but will in fact get younger as he ages. This might have something to do with a newly installed clock in the local train station that tells time backwards. The clock was created by the mysterious Monsieur Gateau (Elias Koteas), who wanted time to go backwards so that his son, killed in World War I, might come back to him. A movie review and critic By Chris Pearson

Sissy Spacek - Lake City Movie Synopsis, Review, Critic, Trailer

Lake City Movie Synopsis
In this searing Southern drama, a mother and son reunite under desperate circumstances years after a family tragedy drove them far apart. When a young man gets into trouble with a local drug dealer, he hits the road running with a young companion and heads to the last place on earth he wants to go - his childhood home. A mother and son reunite under desperate circumstances years after a family tragedy drove them apart. Once together, they are forced to sort out their past and escape a dangerous situation in the present.

Lake City Movie Review and Critic
It’s always appreciated when filmmakers turn away from the two coasts and actually try and make movies about the way the rest of the country lives, but movies like Lake City aren’t helping anyone. Contrived and too serious for its own good, it’s hard to imagine any distributor loving it so much they want to let the rest of the world see it. Consider yourselves spared of the boredom. A movie review and critic By Katey Rich

In their debut outing, helmer-scribes Perry Moore and Hunter Hill fall victim to the Rapunzel fallacy: the belief that if you capture a star, he or she can spin cliche hay into cinematic gold. In “Lake City,” Sissy Spacek faces down murderous drug dealers and races through the cornfields to protect her grandson in a Southern heartstring-tugger about the importance of family. Thesps — including Dave Matthews (sans band), Drea de Matteo, Keith Carradine and Jane Fonda-offspring Troy Garity — set off enough emotional tripwires to stave off bathos, but it’s a near thing. Theatrical chances look dim. A movie review and critic By RONNIE SCHEIB

You can’t go home again, unless your girlfriend pisses off Dave Matthews by stealing his cocaine and heroin and you have to take her son—who’s also your son, except you haven’t told him yet because you know you’re a loser—back to the farm where you were raised and where your brother died and where his memory continues to wear on your mother’s conscience. Quaintly shot and paced, not unlike Shotgun Stories, but insanely over-written, Lake City dumps on audiences a plot that consists of 500-some-odd puzzle pieces that all come together exactly as you expect. This is the type of film where detail doesn’t so much reflect character as it advances the logistics of a bird-brained ending that has Mary Margaret (Sissy Spacek) running through a cornfield with her grandson Clayton (Colin Ford) while thugs riding a gas-guzzling monstrosity nip at their heels. A movie review and critic By Ed Gonzalez
