The Secrets Movie Synopsis
In The Secrets, two brilliant young women discover their own voices in a repressive orthodox culture where females are forbidden to sing, let alone speak out. Naomi, the studious, devoutly religious daughter of a prominent rabbi, convinces her father to postpone her marriage for a year so that she might study at a Jewish seminary for women in the ancient Kabalistic seat of Safed. Naomi’s quest for individuality takes a defiant turn when she befriends Michelle, a free-spirited and equally headstrong fellow student. When the pair encounters a mysterious, ailing foreigner with a disturbing past named Anouk (the iconic French actress Fanny Ardant) they begin a risky journey into forbidden realms. In the hopes of easing her suffering, Naomi and Michelle secretly lead Anouk through a series of Kabalistic cleansing rituals. The process opens up overwhelming new horizons for the girls who find themselves caught between the rigid male establishment they grew up in, and the desire to be true to themselves, no matter the cost.
The Secrets Movie Review and Critic
With an exotic Jewish subculture, a French star and a lesbian love affair, Avi Nesher’s “The Secrets” would appear to have all the art cinema demographic bases covered. Part of a stream of Israeli films treating the country’s Orthodox community with an alternately critical and sympathetic liberal-feminist point of view, drama about a group of Kabbalah students caring for an outcast is excessively overwrought and drawn out. Serious topics risk tilting into unintended comedy, and it’s unclear if the intended auds will tolerate the entire package, pointing to mixed commercial results. A movie review and critic By ROBERT KOEHLER
The Secrets is a mesmerizing excursion into an insular spiritual community, while candidly touching on its simultaneously euphoric and oppressive aspects. And though the story’s emotional elements extend for too long a time and reinforce some female sterotypes while leaving many questions unanswered about the mysterious Anouk who has so deeply affected these impressionable young women, the film conveys an undeniable alluring tenderness, however tragic. Supporting characters are often no more than caricatures, with Dana Ivgy (who was wonderful in 2004’s Or) especially suffering in an underdrawn role of limited substance. Adir Miller as Yanki on the other hand gets to have quite an impact while allowing the audience to smile along, in a role that may have otherwise seemed inconsequential. In the end, The Secrets succeeds in becoming a reasonably moving love story set against a backdrop of Orthodox Judaism and sexual repression. Occasionally clunky transitions in character aside, the performances of the two leads are strong, and - although it slightly outlasts its welcome - the film is a satisfying experience. With a little more attention to detail, however, The Secrets may have been great. A movie review and critic By Mark Lavercombe
